Beaucarnea: an unusual guest from Mexico in your home

Beaucarnea, also known as nolina, is a popular houseplant native to Mexico. In the wild, it is a perennial shrub or tree, but at home, beaucarnea grows quite compact. Beaucarnea is a genus of tree-like plants from the Asparagus family. This name was given in honor of Jean-Baptiste Beaucarne, a famous Belgian plant collector who discovered a new tree during an expedition to Mexico. At the same time, it is also found in Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua, and unofficially plants of this genus are called:

• elephant foot;
• horse tail;
• bottle palm;
• bottle tree.

Some types of Beaucarnea are cultivated for decorative purposes, including indoor cultivation. In home gardening, the most commonly used is Beaucarnea reflexa, and it is this, by the way, that is usually meant when talking about a bottle palm. This nickname was given to the plant for the similarity of the trunk to the shape of a bottle.
In addition to Beaucarnea reflexa, in houses, apartments, offices, greenhouses and hothouses, you can also find Nolina tenuifolia, Nolina longifolia, Nolina matapskaya and others. All varieties are adapted for indoor conditions and feel good in pots and vases.

Beaucarnea palm: choosing and caring for the plant

Nolina reflexa is the most popular choice of amateur and professional gardeners. It can grow up to 2 m indoors, it has dense and fleshy long leaves collected in a rosette, so in everyday life it is often called a palm, although this is incorrect. Indoors, nolina usually does not bloom, but some enthusiasts still manage to achieve this.
It is usually grown by seed, but it takes a very long time to wait for the sprouts to hatch, the first leaves to appear and the plants to get stronger, so the vegetative method is also used - propagation by shoots. However, you should grow the flower yourself and this method for several months or even years, so the best solution is to buy a beaucarnea in an already adult form.
After purchasing nolina, you need to provide sufficient diffused lighting throughout the year; in winter, phytolamps are used for additional lighting. The usual room temperature will be enough, but during the dormant period, you can lower it a little - to 11-17 ° C. The plant must be protected from wind and drafts.
Indoor beaucarnea requires abundant, but not frequent watering. It is best to immerse the flower pot completely in water, waiting until it is absorbed into the soil, and then take it out. Then excess water should be allowed to drain so that it does not stagnate and the root system does not rot. The water should be settled or filtered, soft. In winter, the frequency and volume of watering can be reduced.
This completes the basic care of the nolina, the plant only needs to be fed from time to time with universal mineral fertilizers to ensure splendor and decorativeness. Formative pruning of the bokarnea is not necessary, and it needs to be replanted every few years, and the older the plant, the less often this should be done.
