How do you care for roses?

Roses are one of the most popular and beloved types of flowers. They symbolize love, respect, and elegance, which is why they are often chosen as the perfect gift. However, to keep a bouquet fresh for as long as possible, it’s important to follow basic care guidelines. Even the freshest roses can wilt quickly without proper attention.

First of all, prepare the flowers as soon as you receive them. Remove the packaging (or loosen it) so the stems can “breathe.” Then trim the stems by about 1–2 cm at a 45-degree angle. It’s important to use a sharp knife or pruner rather than scissors to avoid damaging the stem structure. Ideally, trim the stems under water to prevent air from entering the capillaries.

Water is the key factor in keeping roses fresh. Use clean, cool water and change it daily or at least every two days. Before each refill, rinse the vase thoroughly, as bacteria in the water are the main cause of quick wilting. It’s also recommended to slightly re-trim the stems each time to improve water absorption.

Choosing the right place for your bouquet is just as important. Roses do not like direct sunlight, drafts, or sudden temperature changes. Avoid placing them near radiators, air conditioners, or fruits — fruits release ethylene gas, which accelerates the aging of flowers.

Pay attention to the leaves: anything that sits in the water should be removed. Leaves in water quickly start to rot, promoting bacterial growth. Clean water and minimal organic residue are essential for prolonging the life of your bouquet.

For better results, you can use special flower food for cut flowers, which is often included with bouquets. It contains nutrients and antiseptics that significantly extend the freshness of roses. If you don’t have it, some people use home alternatives like a bit of sugar and a few drops of lemon juice, but these should be used carefully.

If the roses begin to wilt slightly, you can try to “revive” them. Refresh the cut, place the flowers in cold water, and leave them in a cool place for a few hours. In some cases, this helps restore their fresh appearance.

Caring for roses doesn’t take much time, but it greatly affects their appearance and longevity. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the beauty of your bouquet not just for a few days, but much longer. And most importantly, your gift will leave lasting positive emotions and impressions.
